The 14 barrier islands off the coast of Virginia’s Eastern Shore are the longest stretch of undeveloped shoreline on the East Coast. That’s when the horses that inhabit part of this barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia are rounded up for a 3-minute swim across the channel. Some 40,000 spectators crowd in here each July to watch the famed Chincoteague Wild Pony Swim. It’s the one time of year when things can get really hectic on the island - though many people say the event is so cool that it’s worth dealing with the crowds. Summer is the best time to travel for weather, but keep in mind while planning your trip that the island’s annual Pony Swim takes place in late July. And best of all, you might snare a private viewing of the shaggy brown and white horses that make this place so famous. The roads, beaches and hiking trails through the woods and dunes are quiet and uncrowded. The area is part of the Atlantic flyway for migrating shorebirds, and everyone can enjoy the bird-watching. The best time to visit is during the spring (March – May). And don't forget sand stakes for your tent - you will absolutely need them.Īll staff that I interacted with were knowledgeable and friendly - they do a great job, and the campground was clean and well managed.Chincoteague Island Weather – When to Visit If camping on the beach, be sure to pack a dust pan and brush - the sand gets EVERYWHERE. If, on the other hand, the wind is blowing out to see, it blows the insects out to the beach. If the wind is blowing in from the ocean, it will blow the insects inland (if you're camping in the marshes, God help you). How bad the bugs might be is dependent upon the wind direction. I was mauled by mosquitoes and horseflies, and I got no sleep with the storm that came through that night - it was a miracle that my tent didn't blow away - with me in it. The second day/evening/night was ruined by a storm - and BUGS. The first night was muggy inside the tent, but I slept on and off. This one was was about the size of a dinner plate. I also filmed a (living) horseshoe crab at the waters edge - an amazing critter. One involved a stallion galloping past me on the beach - which luckily I caught on camera. The horses are beautiful, and I had several encounters with them that I'll never forget. It's a special place - you'll definitely see wild horses on the beach and on the roads. I'd been to Assateague before, but never camped on a beach before. I spent two nights here - 7/5/18 and 7/6/18 - camping on the beach. ![]()
